Creating Safe Space

What is Safe Space.png

June is full of wonderful celebrations: Pride! Juneteenth! Just Call Me Chefs birthday! Chef Kiah's Birthday! National Soul Food Month! Caribbean American Heritage Month! And the Summer Solstice! So many wonderful things to celebrate.

As we celebrate the beauty joy this month has to offer we are still remembering the way June felt a year ago. We are surrounded by constant reminders that Black lives are not safe, that queer and trans lives are not safe, that much of what we are celebrating and hold dear this month are communities and people that are still being harmed, killed and harassed on a regular basis.

Which brings us to the word "Safe". This word has been on our minds throughout the development of this business. Specifically around the question "What is Safe Space?". It is no secret that food spaces designed by white cis men have created spaces crowded with toxic masculinity, sexual harassment and assault, and racism. We are tiered of working in spaces where what's comfortable is being defined by white cis men. We want a new kitchen, we want a safe kitchen, we want a kitchen that centers women and marginalized genders of color.

Help us answer this question. The more voices involved in defining what "safe" means, the safer it will be. Let us know "what makes a space safe?" by e-mailing us your response at
ourtimekitchen@gmail.com. We will be sharing your answers via social media over the next few months!
